Microsoft has rolled out an update for Windows 11, bringing a fresh approach to how Task Manager measures CPU usage. This change aligns more closely with methods used by well-known third-party tools.

It appears Microsoft has recognized that Task Manager’s performance metrics haven’t been holding up against the in-depth insights offered by third-party applications. Consequently, the upcoming update revamps Task Manager’s CPU utilization metrics to mirror those of external tools, potentially offering a more accurate and reliable monitoring experience.

Although tools like HWINFO have been the go-to for many, this update might make Task Manager your first choice. The release timing of this update is, however, still on the horizon.

For those who prefer sticking with the current setup, Microsoft is introducing an optional column called CPU Utility within the "Details" tab. This adjustment ensures backward compatibility is straightforward. These changes are currently part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, as part of the 24H2 update.
