Integrating a card system into a first-person shooter comes from an intriguing inspiration: sports rules. Chang Xin, the driving force behind FragPunk, is an avid sports enthusiast and believes that the constant evolution of sports rules aims to boost suspense and engage the audience. This idea is mirrored by the King’s League in Europe, which successfully jazzes up soccer with item-based elements. Even in a game like soccer that values fairness, randomness can heighten the excitement, uncovering a vast potential market.
The competitive FPS landscape is often about balance and tactics, leading to repetitive play. Chang Xin observed that many traditional FPS designs lacked the suspense needed to make matches thrilling and unpredictable. With Shard Cards, FragPunk injects unexpected dynamics into FPS gameplay, enhancing both strategic depth and tactical options for everyone.
### Designing the Cards
Creating Shard Cards came with its own set of hurdles. Bad Guitar Studio’s team grappled with maintaining game balance while also crafting innovative card designs. Early prototypes of FragPunk allowed players to tweak game rules directly, limiting creative freedom for future card development.
However, this changed when the team realized that Shard Cards’ true potential lay in breaking gameplay norms. This shift opened up a more creative design process. Take for instance the “Dimensional Travel” card, which initially envisioned players shifting between worlds. Implementing this proved challenging, so the approach evolved. Players now can become invisible to enemies, mimicking dual worlds without changing maps.
### Balancing Fun with Competition
While some players worry that the cards might undermine competitive integrity, the main goal remains boosting suspense and variety to enrich the FPS experience. Core shooting skills remain the same, with the cards providing surprising new possibilities.
Newer players appreciate the variety introduced by the card system. Matches become less predictable, making the game more enjoyable overall. Traditional FPS games often frustrate new players due to skill gaps, but FragPunk’s diverse tactical opportunities provide a more welcoming experience.
Every card follows a thoughtfully crafted tactical design, allowing players to forge unexpected strategies.
