A recent report from a seasoned insider at Microsoft suggests the company is developing at least three new Xbox controllers. Among them is expected to be a sequel to the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
Typically, Microsoft’s new controller releases are updates of existing models rather than fresh designs. However, it seems they’re now working on a unique lineup. According to industry insider Jez Corden, who shared insights on The Xbox Two Podcast in late February 2025, these controllers are currently in the prototype stage. He also hinted that the latest Xbox Series X operating system may already contain references to these devices.
Let’s take a closer look at these rumored controllers:
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 3
The successor to the high-end Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2, this controller first launched in November 2019, just before the current generation of consoles. It is expected to incorporate native support for Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing a direct connection to the cloud without relying on Bluetooth connections through another device. This direct Wi-Fi method, successfully demonstrated by the Google Stadia controller, can reduce latency significantly—an essential improvement for competitive gaming experiences.
Mid-range Controller – "Sebile"
Sebile, a mid-range offering, originally leaked in September 2023 through some redacted FTC documents. Corden has confirmed its ongoing development, emphasizing its potential to support cloud gaming via a feature known as "Direct-To-Cloud."
Entry-Level Controller
The third prototype in the works is aimed at the entry-level market. It may serve as a replacement for the existing Xbox Wireless Controller, though it’s likely to skip the cloud-specific features present in its pricier counterparts.
As these controllers remain in their prototype phase, there’s no guarantee all will be commercialized. Historically, Microsoft tends to announce new controllers a few weeks to months before their release. So, until official announcements are made, all we can do is speculate and wait.
