A tale as old as, well, not that long ago, actually, 2007-ish? Man, time flies, huh?
Okay, so here we go—Switch 2 just smashed records, becoming the fastest-selling console ever. We’re talking 3.5 million units over its first weekend. Crazy, right? But then, like, where were all the game announcements? Did someone hit the snooze button at HQ? Seriously, here’s what we got:
Final Fantasy Tactics remaster and Mortal Kombat Kollection—sure, those are over at Sony, and they’re still on the good ol’ Switch 1.
We’ve got Sonic Racing: Cross Worlds (finally, after a delay), and some spruced-up bits for Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Hitman: World of Assassination, and Street Fighter VI—yeah, these were part of some sort of kickoff event.
Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar got a trailer at Wholesome Games—again, Switch 1 legacy.
New stuff—Call of the Elder Gods and Constance show up at Future Games—both of these hit the double Switches.
And, oh, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3-4 teased a demo? But only if you’re preordering, I think?
Lots of Switch 1 love. Switch 2, not so much. It’s like, did I miss something?
But, but! Okay, bear with me. Maybe it’s all about numbers. Like, there are 152 million Switch 1 units floating around. I mean, who’d ignore that crowd? Plus, this isn’t some smooth transition. It’s a bit like PlayStation 2 to 3, where PS2 games hung around way after PS3 was out. Price differences, too—it was wilder back then.
Even Nintendo’s still on the Switch 1 train with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Zut Alors coming soon. Rhythm Heaven Groove and Tomodachi Life—no clue if they’ll jump onto Switch 2. So if they can keep it going on Switch 1, why not, right? Keep that lower fidelity rolling.
Here’s another thought—have all the devkits even made their grand entrance yet? Seems like a few insiders and smaller studios have been the early birds. Toby Fox for Deltarune and folks working on Marvel Cosmic Invasion are already out there. During Saturday’s tsunami of presentations—small teams mainly. Not like those pseudo-small teams that are actually bigger… anyway, you get what I mean.
Still gotta keep an eye on the eShop, though. If things aren’t running well on Switch 2, maybe they don’t show up there. I’m giving it a few more months before I’m convinced everyone’s happily testing their creations on the new machine.
Or it could be that Nintendo’s already flooded the market with devkits—I don’t have the inside scoop. Anyone? Drop a note or scream in Discord if you know what’s really going on. January or April were probably when Switch 2 started making waves. But considering how long game development takes, it’s not like we’re seeing full projects overnight.
Look, there might be more Switch 2 game news coming straight from Nintendo themselves. Remember Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase in June 2022? Persona games came to various platforms—Switch got its hints a couple weeks later. So this dance isn’t new. Predicting big announcements is like weather forecasting—sometimes they just sneak up on you.
Nintendo has this thing for their exclusive moments in the sun—like in a Nintendo Direct. And they love pulling these stunts during times I actually have some, you know, downtime. Thanks, guys. Perfect timing, always. They once showed off Splatoon Raiders in just a minute of airtime. Barely a blip, but we might see more surprises like that.
And think about these: Super Mario World (the film) showing up—could that mean a Mario Kart World or Donkey Kong Bonanza? Dunno. Or is Nintendo done flirting with Doritos Pope Geoff after Reggie left? Their presence at SGF events is practically ghostly now.
Oh, and Microsoft stuff like Grounded or Pentiment, which ended up on Switch 1. You bet Nintendo did the shouting. Could Halo or Gears of War make the jump to Switch 2? Who’s to say. But Call of Duty on a Nintendo console? Possible.
So, 24 games ready and five upgrades from day one on Switch 2. Not too shabby if you ask me. No need to scream “dead platform” because flashy announcements were MIA. Things are cooking, patience is your friend. And to those 3.5 million of you already on board, guess what? More good stuff’s on the way. Trust the process, or some other cliché that fits.
