Many indie developers have tried their hand at capturing the essence of those classic Japanese RPGs we all hold dear, but not many have succeeded quite like Critical Games. This Australian studio has pulled off something truly remarkable with 8-Bit Adventures 2. It’s a game that pays homage to its predecessors without losing its own unique flair.

Leaning into nostalgia can be tricky; it often sets up a creative project to fall short, becoming nothing more than a shadow of legendary titles it seeks to emulate. Yet, 8-Bit Adventures 2 confidently breaks free from that trap. It confidently stands on its own, beginning with its sharp writing, brimming with personality. The dialogue is zippy and engaging, quickly making you fall for the charm of the main party.

Though this is a sequel, featuring characters and nods to the original 8-Bit Adventures — which, by the way, isn’t available on PlayStation, is worth mentioning — the storyline unfolds years later. It explores the world-changing aftermath of the original’s events.

This backdrop already has its heroes, and that makes for a compelling premise. Charlie, our young protagonist, is eager to walk in their footsteps. Before long, he’s battling alongside his idols, facing the repercussions of their past deeds.

Worry not if you haven’t played the first game; the sequel is designed to stand alone and does a fantastic job of bringing newcomers up to speed.

What really makes 8-Bit Adventures 2 stand out is its straightforward yet finely tuned gameplay. The turn-based combat is central, with each party member displaying unique abilities.
