Apple Expected to Unveil “Feature-Rich” visionOS 3.0 Update at June WWDC

Apple is gearing up to make quite the splash with visionOS 3.0, as Mark Gurman from Bloomberg suggests. At this year’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC), the spotlight will shine on Vision Pro’s operating system rather than unveiling any fresh XR hardware.

Even with its steep $3,500 price tag and luxury positioning, Apple remains committed to advancing the Vision Pro’s software since its release in February 2024. They’ve rolled out several new productivity tools, such as the much-anticipated ultra-wide Mac Virtual Display and the comprehensive set of Apple Intelligence features available in the developer preview.

Gurman now indicates that Apple plans to unveil visionOS 3.0 at WWDC, which typically happens in June. He adds, “It’s clear that the Vision Products Group is refocusing its efforts on other forms, but Apple can’t allow the Vision Pro to fade. The investment made demands that they keep the updates rolling, and I hear visionOS 3.0 is going to be quite the substantial release.”

While there’s no word yet on the specifics of what visionOS 3.0 will offer, if it’s anything like the previous version released at WWDC 2024, developers can expect to dive into it as soon as it’s unveiled. Speculations are running high, though details remain scarce. One potential improvement might involve addressing the headset’s current lack of motion controllers. Gurman recently shared that Apple is exploring partnership with Sony to bring PSVR 2’s Sense Controllers into the Vision Pro ecosystem.

On the subject of new hardware announcements—or the absence thereof—at WWDC 2025, Gurman’s insights resonate with earlier predictions by renowned Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Multiple Vision Pro successors seem to be on the drawing board. Gurman reveals that Apple is considering releasing a headset with a new M-series chip, potentially an M5, along with more affordable versions. Contrary to Kuo’s assertion that an upgraded M5 variant of the Vision Pro would launch this year, Gurman believes we won’t see a new headset iteration from Apple until 2025.
