Atelier games, a beloved series in the gaming community since their debut in the late ’90s, are finally making their way to the Xbox platform with the upcoming release of Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories and the Envisioned Land. If you’re not familiar with the series, you’re not alone, as this marks the first time an Atelier game will be available on Xbox. Having spent some quality time with the game and chatted with its producer, Junzo Hosoi, it’s apparent that this entry is not just another addition to the series; rather, it’s a groundbreaking and ambitious reimagining for Xbox players.
Hosoi shared his enthusiasm with me over email, saying, “As a huge Xbox fan, I’m thrilled to finally bring the series to the system. But when I look at the game as a whole, I don’t describe Atelier Yumia as the next Atelier game. I see it as a completely new JRPG series with familiar Atelier elements.”
During my hands-on experience, I noticed that the game incorporates a host of classic RPG components, such as strategic real-time battles, crafting, and exploration. Nonetheless, these elements mesh together in a way that feels refreshingly novel. The heart of this difference lies in its very detailed crafting system.
Hosoi elaborated, “The charm of the Atelier series is all about the synthesis and alchemy process. The game cycle is quite unique, involving collecting resources, engaging in battles, and employing the synthesis system, with each aspect intertwined.”
This enchanting quality extends to the characters, particularly the protagonist, Yumia Liessfeldt, who brings a more mature presence to the series compared to some previous heroines.
“Yumia is 21 years old, and the story revolves around her journey into adulthood,” Hosoi explains. “Her story is filled with themes of independence and charm. Unlike younger protagonists like Ryza and Sophie who needed mentors, Yumia forges her path with her own identity and decision-making skills.” Plus, she rides a motorcycle!
The game introduces Aladiss, a new continent that views alchemy with skepticism. Early on, we see Yumia striving to prove her abilities. What sets her apart is her exceptional synthesis skills, enhanced by a unique building system that fans of crafting survival games will appreciate. However, during my playthrough, it was her combat prowess that truly stood out.
Traditionally, Atelier games featured turn-based combat until the recent real-time battles found in the Atelier Ryza titles. For Atelier Yumia, feedback from fans has led to a robust and varied combat system ripe for players to master.
“The battle mechanics have been overhauled with the inclusion of close and ranged combat options,” Hosoi says. “Players can freely maneuver the active character around enemies or between two attack zones, use real-time guarding or dodging, and even execute potent cooperative attacks when an enemy is stunned. For Atelier Yumia, we want to showcase players’ skills directly in battle.”
This fast-paced combat lets players switch control between Yumia and her companions on the fly. Knowing where and when to strike, or evade, is crucial. It’s a straightforward task against a solo enemy, but in larger skirmishes, strategic thinking comes into play.
Adding layers of complexity are the different enemy weaknesses and the ability to perform powerful Friend Actions. Despite its charming visuals, the game demands acute situational awareness. Thankfully, the game seamlessly integrates exploration and combat, making it enjoyable to gain experience and easy to sidestep fights when you simply want to return to town.
Yumia’s journey isn’t solitary; she’s accompanied by a colorful cast of companions you’ll meet during the game’s prologue. One character, Flammi, is particularly whimsical, and surprisingly, Hosoi mentions inspiration from an Xbox legend for its creation.
“Flammi was inspired by Halo’s Cortana,” Hosoi reveals, “I wanted Yumia to have a constant and interactive companion, akin to the dynamic seen in Halo. It was such an entertaining aspect that I wanted Atelier Yumia to have something similar.”
The release of Atelier Yumia aligns with a vibrant moment for Koei Tecmo. With successes like Dynasty Warriors Origins and announcements like Ninja Gaiden 4, there’s a palpable positive momentum at the company.
“We have a great rapport among Koei Tecmo’s brand producers,” notes Hosoi. “We regularly share insights and feedback through conferences, and this cooperation helps refine and elevate our games. Ultimately, my ambition is for Atelier Yumia to be recognized worldwide as the pinnacle of the series.”
